Dynamic Lanes
During periods of peak tourist traffic, particularly on summer and winter weekends and during major public holidays, the A22 experiences particularly heavy traffic with volumes that can reach 3,000 vehicles per hour per lane. On such days, slow-moving traffic, queues and congestion may occur, which also affect the general traffic flow in the areas the motorway passes through.
One of the most affected sections is the Egna–Verona stretch, approximately 123 km long, where, at peak times, travel time can be up to three times longer than under normal traffic conditions.
Given the environmental and territorial sensitivity of the Adige Valley, the third dynamic lane project aims to improve traffic flow while minimising the use of new land by means of the temporary use of the hard shoulder during periods of peak traffic.
The activation of the dynamic lane enables the infrastructure’s capacity to be increased to around 4,000–4,200 vehicles per hour, thereby improving service levels, safety and environmental sustainability by reducing congestion and emissions.
The system is managed using ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) technology, with cameras, sensors, variable message signs and real-time monitoring systems that regulate lane usage and inform users about traffic conditions and speed limits.
Major infrastructure changes have been made to make this system possible, including the widening of the hard shoulder from 2.50 to 3.50 metres, as well as the upgrading of road signs, safetybarriers, hard shoulders and entry and exit ramps. A dedicated technological network has also been developed for data transmission and to power the intelligent traffic management systems.
