Brenner Base Tunnel
The rail sector along the Brenner corridor is undergoing a strategic transformation thanks to the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT), one of Europe’s most important infrastructure projects dedicated to sustainable mobility.
The project, with a total value of over 10 billion euros, will link Innsbruck (Austria) to Fortezza (Italy) via a 55 km railway tunnel. Taking into account the link to the Innsbruck railway bypass, the system will reach a total length of 64 km, making it the longest underground railway link in the world. Completion of the project is currently scheduled for 2032.
The tunnel will consist of two main single-track tubes, interconnected every 333 metres by cross-passages dedicated to safety and maintenance. The system also includes a central exploratory tunnel and four side access tunnels located at Ampass, Ahrental, Wolf and Mules.
The infrastructure will significantly speed up rail connections across the Alps, improving both passenger and freight transport.
Autostrada del Brennero has also been contributing to the realisation of this strategic project for many years. Since 1998, the Company has been setting aside significant annual funds derived from motorway operations into a specific ‘ Ferrovia[DA1] Fund’, to support the development of rail transport along the Brenner corridor.
